    Mortician Militia: Retiring #34

At the 5th bout of Season 9, we were sad but excited to remember and honor one of our leagues greatest, and most influential skaters.

    Morticia Militia!!

    morti_web

During Half time of the bout, her teammates and close friends gathered by the announcers table while Angelica Della Morte was honored with the opportunity to give Morticia the award. Some of the Hula Honeys even showed their love by wearing a shirt with Morticia’s face printed on the front. They sure do “miss her face” as their sign claims.

    [Angelic’s speech below]

“Tonight we’re honoring one of these special people, someone who is very near and dear to my heart, Morticia Militia!

Morti transformed from a shy new Cadet into one of our fiercest skaters on the track. Her bubbly personality and fun sense of style always brought a smile to your face and her amazing skills as both a blocker and jammer were envied by all.

She always went above and beyond for the league, serving as a member of our Board of Directors, Captain for the Hula Honeys, and all-star Bomber! Her OCD-ness and crafty skills made her the perfect party planner and we always had a lot of fun putting together our end of the year party shenanigans. This Old Goat is the perfect example of what Jet City is all about: fun, competition and, above all, sisterhood.”

  • JCRG Season 9 Championships: April 16th!!!

JCRG Season 9 Championships: April 16th!!!

The Jet City Rollergirls are holding their FINAL bout of the season on April 16th, and you better be there, or be square.

This year we have a double header and a repeat of season 8. With The Hula Honeys going up against the CarnEvil for the 3rd place slot this year. Both teams are evenly matched and if you were there for the 3rd bout this season you know your going to have a close and thrilling game to experience. Then the Camaro Harem are duking it out against the Pink Pistols once again, but this time for the Championship title.  This could be the 3rd year in a row that the Harem holds the championship trophy. However, the Pistols are out for blood and they have been training hard all season to take back what they feel is theirs. Back at champs in Season 7, the Pistols were also gunning for their 3rd Season Championship win, when the ladies in orange picked up the speed and the JCRG Home team trophy. Wether its a repeat of last year or the year prior its anyone’s game. One thing is for sure, this is NOT a game you want to miss.

As always; there will be awesome beer from Redhook in the beer garden, Hot Dogs by the ever delicious Dantes Inferno Dogs, and popcorn and soda for sale as well.

  • So You Had an ‘Off Day’

We are the few, the proud, the derby playing ladies (and gents).  We pride ourselves on our ability to be intimidating and tough competitors. We do things on skates that our fans, family and friends idolize; but what is most notable out on the track is attitude.  It doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned derby veteran or a freshly drafted cadet, how you handle yourself on the rink speaks a great deal to your character.  This is ESPECIALLY true when you are having an off day.

How easy is it to be positive and motivating when you’re kicking @$$ and feeling indestructible?!  Devastating opponent’s walls while jamming, making the other teams jammers furious by recycling them to the back of the pack and being ‘the problem’ while blocking. Heck, I’m pumped up and motivated just envisioning myself in those situations! But what happens when it’s one of those days? Those dreaded days or moments when everything you fear comes true. Your skates aren’t cooperating, your body hurts, your mind knows what to do but it isn’t happening, and everything you practiced will just NOT work no matter how hard you try.  I could go on and on, but what matters is, how do you handle it?

Are you visually frustrated? Yelling at refs, skaters, even coaches? Accidentally offending teammates instead of giving constructive criticism?

Truth is, THIS is when your team needs you the most. The precedent you set when you are in a funk attests to what type of skater you choose to be! This is what defines you as either an asset, or a ‘negative-Nancy’.  Every time I feel myself getting sucked into the negative vortex of no return I challenge myself to do the following:

    1. Admit it. This one little step is HUGE! Today may not be your day, this drill/jam/scenario may be your kryptonite but that is OK! Everyone runs into this at some point or another, however, admitting it lets us move past the mental block slowly consuming our thoughts and emotions like a black hole of derby death.
    2. Find something, ANYTHING, that’s working well and focus on that. Because hey, that one thing you’re doing ROCKS!
    3. Be a good teammate. Don’t let your off day become someone else’s. Own it and control it. How you act under stress and pressure says more than you know to your team AND others around you.
    4. Find a way to reduce off days from happening in the future. Maybe you need to stretch more before practice or bouts, eat healthier, say yes to more practice opportunities, do off skate’s workouts etc.

Finding beneficial take-a way’s from a less than ideal time is a way to actively TRY to fix it! So on the days I’m falling A LOT, jamming through the pack as slow as a turtle running through molasses on a cold winter day, or blocking a jammer about as successfully as an old western swinging saloon door, I challenge myself to smile and be the best teammate I can be.  I have the power to make sure my off day doesn’t affect anyone else; and being a great teammate, that’s something I can be proud of.

So you had an off day? I challenge you to take that as an opportunity to grow, and guess what? Tomorrow is another day and another opportunity to CRUSH it!

  • Santa Skate; A Jet City Event

On December 21st Jet City held their 10th annual Santa Skate for charity. This event was created by our founding mommas, as a way to raise money and awareness for local charities during the holiday season. Skaters and their families dressed in their holiday finest, skated with Santa, and donated food and gift cards in the spirit of giving.

Over the years we have partnered with Cocoon House; a Snohomish County organization that helps the homeless youth in our community. This year we collected $740 in gift cards that were donated to this great cause. At our home bout the night before we raised over $200 in our 50/50 raffle to donate to Cocoon House as well.

At Santa Skate we also collected canned food for donation to the Everett Food Bank. Teams brought in hundreds of pounds of food until our collection bins were overflowing. We would like to say thank you to all of our fans and league members that generously donated and helped to make this years’ Santa Skate a smashing success!

  • Connie Torturous Inducted into Hall Of Fame

Connie Torturous Inducted into Hall Of Fame

Saturday, November 21st 2015 was not only the opening bout of our 9th season, it was also a reunion for many skaters; new and old. We came together to celebrate our successes in the past and kick off the 9th season of JCRG with a BANG! Which of course we did… it was awesome! Don’t worry if you missed it; check out the results page to get caught up!

Other than the epic battle of the skates that took place; We also had the honor to recognize one skater for her time, effort, and dedication to the league by inducting her into the JCRG Hall of Fame!

We started the Hall of Fame to honor those league members who have not only excelled as athletes, but have also made significant contributions to our league as a whole. These dedicated skaters are the ones we look up to, they are mentors and role models, leaders and cheerleaders.

Connie Torturous is all of this and more!

    JCRG_CarnEvil_Torch

During her time with us, Connie “Torture” Torturous was the first president of our Board of Directors in 2008, the first Captain for CarnEvil in 2009 and skated for our all-star Bombers for 6 years, which is a lifetime in derby! She also formed and led our External Affairs committee from 2009-2011 and led our New Skater Committee in 2014.  She was also regularly voted “League’s Best Socks.”
Her positive and warm spirit, never ending supply of Hi-5’s and rainbow socks, her fierceness on and off the track embodies the true spirit of the Jet City Rollergirls.

“The real reason that I nominated Torture was not just because she was a hard worker.  I nominated Torture because she is a personal hero of mine within Jet City Rollergirls. I have always valued Torture because she has the ability to analyze, take action, and is always having fun.

When I first started as Treasurer, there were some hard decisions that I had to make, including moving to a smaller venue.  During that event Torture was a mentor to me.  Someone with whom I could share my personal struggle with that decision and a fresh set of eyes who could look things over to make sure I had looked at everything from every angle.  There were some bumps in that move and I’ll never forget a panicked phone call I had to make on the eve of the season. It was Torture that was able to offer a sounding board in this crisis.

I was also on the New Skater committee when Torture was lead.  Torture was able to solidify a lot of the work that we did within that program and rally us in a period of low recruitment.  New Skater is always a challenging job because as a skater, you desperately want people to give themselves the chance to learn and sometimes you face people telling you they don’t feel personally capable of learning to skate.  It was Torture’s positive and warm spirit that kept the committee going when we had just a few new skaters.  I was always impressed at the meetings when she would bring so many ideas to the table and take our ideas because real action would take place after the meetings.  It is so rare in a volunteer organization to see some execute on their ideas.  It made her an incredibly valuable leader within our organization.

Finally, Torture embodied for me that rare spirit of camaraderie within derby.  I saw you all mention her background in this thread, she was in the Peace Corps, she is an advocate for equal rights in her daily work, and she is an athlete.   It’s these unique qualities that drew me to her as a person. She’s just so excited to be alive and skating or running. And her excitement and her values shine through all the other events and experiences within this sport.  Sometimes the world isn’t open to women in athletics.  We’ve all been stereotyped as a rough and tumble “rollergirl,” going through a phase.  Hanging out with Torture always reminded me that every woman competing in roller derby is a hero because they claim their right to compete.  Torture always reminds that this isn’t random; we are taking an action and creating a new tradition and role model for women.  Torture reminded me that we are badasses, even outside of roller derby and even after we stop playing roller derby!  I have the utmost respect for her contributions to our organization and I am thrilled that Jet City is honoring and thanking her by inducting her into the hall of fame. ”  ~Razor WreckHer

JCRG retired #8 from the league roster and hung up her jersey for all to see for seasons to come. Check out the Hall of Fame page to see her Skater Profile.
