The Jet City All Starts Take It All at Wild West Skatedown!

The Jet City All Stars certainly earned the big smiles on their faces (and some much deserved rest for the week). This past weekend, the Jet City traveling team competed in the Wild West Skatedown Tournament in Arizona and showed everyone they are a force to be reckoned with!

On Friday, the All Stars first went toe(stop)-to-toe(stop) with GVRDA Summit, with Jet City taking the win with a 198 to 108 final score.

In their second match-up against the N AZ Outlaws, Jet City started their Saturday off right with an impress score of 218 to 87!

Jet’s final bout of the weekend was against the SoCal Kraken, a team that was certainly going to make the All Stars work to stay in the game. Nerves were high as the teams finished the half with nearly even scores, but the second half is when Jet City likes to kick it up a notch! They pulled out all the stops to win with a final score of 136 to 67.

With 3 sanctioned wins over the tournament weekend, the All Stars raised Jet City’s WFTDA ranking to #6!

And guess what, the fun isn’t over yet!
In just a few weeks (10/19-10/20), the Jet City All Stars will be heading to Colorado to do it all again as they compete at Besterns Tournament!

We will be hosting a live viewing watch party at Broadview Tap House for the Jet v Boulder game on Saturday (10/19) @ 1PM!
Come join the Jet City league as we cheer on our All Stars!
    Good beers. Good cheers.
All ages (and dogs) are welcome!

Support Skate Like a Girl at Our Next Bout!

February is not just a month for love and chocolate and flowers. It is also a time to show what big hearts we have through caring, supporting, and giving. As you may know, each month that we hold our Bouts, we select an organization to donate to. We then conduct a 50/50 raffle where we sell tickets to our fans. A winner is drawn during the halftime of our second bout. That winner receives 50% of the pot, and the other 50% is donated to the selected organization!

For the month of February, we are giving our donation to a like-minded, wheel related, non-profit organization, Skate Like a Girl, whe could, in particular, use all of our support.

Founded in 2000 in Olympia, WA, Skate Like a Girl boasts 3 chapters in Seattle, Portland, and the SF Bay Area, serving more than 10,000 skaters every year. This non-profit organization is on a mission to create an inclusive community by promoting confidence, leadership, and social justice through skateboarding. Through their programs and events, they empower young people and the young at heart, especially focusing on historically underrepresented and underserved identities such as women, trans, low-income, and/or BIPOC skaters. The Seattle Chapter does this work through flagship programs and events including bi-weekly Women and/or Trans Sessions, skateboarding day camps for youth, and the annual Wheels of Fortune weekend event, coming up May 17-19th.

Unfortunately their new indoor skate park and storage space in the Central District was struck by a King County Metro bus on Wednesday, January 24th, in the middle of their weekly free student skate session. Miraculously, none of the thirty children and young adults inside were injured. However, their building was severely damaged and they are left without a space, working tirelessly the last few weeks to try and relocate and reschedule the over 8 programs that were planned. If unable to find a new indoor facility, they estimate it will amount to over 3,500 skaters losing access to a safe and inclusive place to skate for the rest of the winter.

Join us at our Februrary bout on the 10th and help Skate Like a Girl get back on board by participating in the 50/50 raffle!

  • Do the Autumn Mash with Jet City this Saturday

Do the Autumn Mash with Jet City this Saturday

We all Fall down sometimes. In derby, the important thing is to get back up and hit a b*tch.

Come to our very special Autumn Mashup bout this Saturday, November 18, to see dozens of local athletes do just that. Jet City has invited skaters from the PNW derby community to skate with and against us in what’s sure to be a very special evening of roller hijinks—two games that will cast friends as enemies until the clock counts down to the final whistle. (At which point expect much hugging and many high-fives).

But feelings aren’t the only things getting mashed this weekend. In honor of this harvest season and the following weekend’s celebration of gluttony, Jet City has partnered with the Edmonds Food Bank, a local organization currently providing groceries for 800 households a week. You can support their mission of creating food security in the greater Edmonds area in three ways:

    1. Bring 3 or more non-perishable food items, toiletries, baby supplies,
and/or household cleaning supplies to the bout and receive a free bag
      of popcorn in return.
    2. Buy tickets to our 50/50 raffle for a chance to go home with half the
pot—and feel good about sending the other half to Edmonds Food
      Bank.
    3. Make a monetary donation when buying bout tickets.

The doors (and beer & cider garden) of Edmonds College’s Seaview Gym open at 4pm, with the first whistle at 5 pm. Admission is $15 in advance or $18 at the door, with discounts for seniors, kids, and military.
Children 5 and under are always free.

And the fun doesn’t have to end at the last whistle—all guests of legal drinking age are invited to join the Jet City After Party at The Bulldog Saloon (19920 WA-99, Lynnwood—about two blocks from Seaview Gym), a fun space with pool, darts, a touch tunes jukebox, and a kitchen serving late.

Is there a better way to Fall into the season than watching skaters beat the stuffing out of each other, with a side of popcorn? We didn’t think so. See you there!

  • Happy Pride!

    Happy Pride!

Happy Pride to our wonderful Jet City community! Here at Jet City, we are proud to nurture a place where everyone can feel safe, supported and loved as their truest selves.

Derby is a sport for anyone who is brave enough to put eight wheels on their feet and run into other people, so naturally it attracts those who don’t always feel accepted in mainstream society. By providing a home and welcome community to each other, derby allows anyone to find a place to express themselves as they are.

Adalaide Herout, a veteran skater who has been with Jet City since 2015, says, “Roller derby has helped me find authenticity in a way that no other venture in my life has. Having a group of people that wholeheartedly support me being the realest version of myself and offering the same for them has changed my idea of friendship and love.”

At Jet City, providing support for LGBTQ+ members has meant building a community that reaches across generations as well, as many skaters also coach at junior league teams or have children who skate. The acceptance of all identities and orientations in derby means that it is often a safe space for kids who may not feel as supported in other sports.

“Derby is one of the first communities where I felt like I could truly be myself in every way,” says Jacklyn Hyde, a skater on Jet City’s travel team. “It has allowed me to learn and grow as a person as well as find like minded individuals to share time and experiences with. My kid and I both skate and I love that derby has brought us closer together and built a unique bond.” Jacklyn’s kid, P.I.T.A., plays roller derby with Mob City Junior Roller Derby.

And of course, at Jet City every month is Pride month, because our community is a family that is full of love, no matter its shape. Perhaps no one can say it better than Mary Contrary, who met her wife Crash Smashum here at Jet City. The two were married in 2019.

“What does roller derby mean to our family? Derby is the reason FOR my family! Jet City and the derby community as a whole have always been joyful places to express and celebrate gayness. Crash and I met playing roller derby and are now married with a little Jet City super-fan of our own. Roller derby has a way of bringing people together, in all sorts of ways!”

Happy Pride, Jet City family! We love you all!

  • Jet City Prevails in a Hard Fought Win over Cherry City

Jet City Prevails in a Hard Fought Win over Cherry City

On February 25th, Jet City Roller Derby traveled south to Salem, Oregon, to take on Cherry City Roller Derby in a triple header. Despite the tough competition, Jet City Roller Derby demonstrated their skill and determination on the track.

Jet City’s seasoned players, including Hydraulic Tess, Crash Smashem, and Mary Contrary, along with newcomer Iron Rabbit, put on a solid jammer rotation that kept the team competitive.

But it wasn’t just the jammers who shined in this game. The blockers played an equally important role, working tirelessly to prevent the opposing team’s jammer from scoring. Both teams demonstrated excellent lateral movement and endless reforming to shut down jammers and execute successful defense.

Jet City’s Bombshell delivered devastating blows to Cherry City’s jammers, preventing them from breaking free from the pack. And it wasn’t just Bombshell who stood out, as players Legs, Tofu, and Crash were also recognized as some of the most valuable players of the night.

Teamwork and strategy were key components of Jet City’s success, and the blockers undoubtedly played a crucial role in securing the team’s impressive win with a final score of Jet City 275, Cherry City 32.

For those who missed out on this exciting event, don’t worry! You can catch Jet City at their next game on March 18th at Edmonds College, where the Mob City Junior Roller Derby will take on Tomorrowland Junior Roller Derby of Tacoma to open the game, followed by the headlining game, Jet City versus Jet City.

Attending live roller derby events is a thrilling way to support local teams and experience the high-energy sport in person. Jet City Roller Derby’s impressive performance in Salem, Oregon proves that they are a force to be reckoned with, and fans can look forward to more exciting games in the future.
