  • Exciting Changes Ahead After 11 Seasons of Jet City Roller Derby

Exciting Changes Ahead After 11 Seasons of Jet City Roller Derby

Jet City Roller Derby is unveiling a new name, and new teams on January 20th , as they move towards a strong future in local sports.

Snohomish County, WA: Jet City Roller Derby is launching its 2018 season with big changes.

On Saturday, January 20, 2018, 6:00 p.m. at Seaview Gymnasium in (Edmonds, WA), Jet City Roller
Derby will present, for the first time, a new look in a new, restructured league. The league, now
consisting of 3 new teams, the Bombers, the Aviators, and the Skyraiders, will make their debut starting
at 6:00 when the first whistle blows for this action-packed double-header.

After ten years of familiar team names, (Camaro Harem, CarnEvil, Hula Honeys, and Pink Pistols) Jet City
is moving to a new look and a new focus of play. Instead of intra-league bouts, these new teams:
Bombers, the Aviators, and the Skyraiders will expand their range of opponents and bring in teams from
across the NW, and beyond. This new style of competition aims to increase the competition level of
roller derby and showcase to fans the high caliber of roller derby in this region.

January 20 th will be the first opportunity to meet these new teams. This bout features the Jet City
Bombers vs. the visiting Palouse River Rollers of Eastern Washington.

The Bombers, Jet City’s highest competitive-level team, plays in the WFTDA (Women's Flat Track Derby
Association) and competes against ranked teams throughout the year for a shot at the International
Championships (Nov. 2018).  Over 400 teams comprise the WFTDA who battle it out for the title of best
roller derby team in the world.

The second bout of the night will feature the Aviators vs. the Skyraiders; Jet City’s newly formulated
teams that have been created out of the skaters from Jet City’s former home teams (CarnEvil, Pink
Pistols, Hula Honeys and Camaro Harem).

“We are excited for all these changes and how we can improve the skater and fan experience” says
Christina “Teeny Bopper” Congdon, board president.

About Jet City Roller Derby: Jet City’s vision is to be the ultimate destination for competitive roller
derby in Washington State; leading the growth of the sport by providing training, promoting athleticism,
and building community for athletes, officials, fans and volunteers. www.jetcityrollerderby.com

  • Bavarian Bruisefest: Orange Domination

    Bavarian Bruisefest: Orange Domination

    Bavarian Bruisefest

    Leavenworth ~ January 13-14, 2018

The Camaro Harem headed east to the snowy town of Leavenworth to compete in the Fourth Annual Bavarian Bruisefest. This bracketed double elimination tournament pitted 12 teams from the Northwest and Canada against each other in a series of 30 minute bouts, with a full 60 minute championship bout Sunday night.

The Harem, seeded at #2, started their weekend with a bout against the Spokannibals on Saturday. The hard-hitting Spokane team came out swinging but ended up being no contenders for the Harem, who took the victory 124-48.

Sunday morning the Harem faced Avalanche City from Fernie, BC in a nail biter where the lead changed often and the Canadians kept the Harem on their toes. Leading by 10 coming in to the last jam, Avalanche was able to hold off the attacking Harem and won the bout 88-82.

Finding themselves in the losing bracket, the Harem’s next opponent was the Spokane Sass of Lilac City Roller Derby. The Sass were having a great weekend until they met the Harem, who doubled up on the Sass during their 30 minute battle. The final score Harem wins 103-47.

With the win, the Harem matched up next with Overbeater’s Anonymous (OBA) who were champions of last year’s Bruisefest and were the #1 seed of the tournament. The Harem fought through the very physical ‘Beaters and with smart and strategic play were able to defeat the reigning champs in the 30 minute bout 96-35.

After a quick break the Harem got back on the track to take on the Gorge Rollergirls. These two teams faced off a year ago in the Dalles with the Harem taking the win and a fun time had by all. The Harem hit their stride in this bout with strong defense and a deep jammer rotation. The Harem took the semi-final game, winning 126-42 and prepared to play in the Championship game against the undefeated Avalanche City.

With only a 30 minute break, the Championship game started at 6:00 and the Harem had to muster every bit of orange power they had as the fresh-legged team from Canada got to work. A strategic time out called by the Harem coaches during the game helped the Harem catch their breath as the scoreboard showed a 54-54 tie game. The 30 second time out proved to be just the thing the Harem needed as the Harem’s solid defense began smothering the Avalanche blockers and jammers. The Harem offense was on-point as well, opening holes for their jammers to run up the score. By the time the dust settled, the Harem took the win with a final score of 215-122.

Bombshell received the Blocker MVP trophy for the tournament and the Harem got the Golden Nutcracker Trophy.

We’d like to thank all the teams, officials, Apple City and CHICKEN for an amazing weekend.

  • Here are some FAQs about the new JCRD

With the recent changes of our league name, and the change of our four home teams blending into two new league teams, we found ourselves being asking so many questions! So we complied the most common ones, and shared them.

Why did you change your name? Inclusive, Women not Girls, Athletes

    • We wanted a name that encompasses everyone involved in our league, skaters, volunteers, Fans and officials
    • We are women not girls and wanted something that highlights our league as athletes rather than girls

Why are you getting rid of Home teams? To be more competitive

    • When the sport first started we had to skate against each other.  Now there are so many leagues in this region, there really isn’t a reason to compete against each other within the league
    • Our new structure allows the Bombers, our international travel team, to focus together all season long
    • Allows for us to play all over the region

Why should I go to a Jet City bout? Affordable, Competitive, Intimate

    • It’s is the best $15 you’re going to spend (it’s affordable)
    • It’s a serious team sport with a high level of competition.
    • Jet City’s venue provides an intimate environment to participate in the action! You’ll hear the hits, see the skaters sweat, and might end up with a rollergirl in your lap.
    • Other?

Who are Jet City Roller derby? We are athletes

    • Based in Everett, Washington, Jet City Roller Derby is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sportsmanship and athleticism by providing training, instruction, and competition in the sport of roller derby.
    • We are proud members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, the governing body of women’s flat track derby.
    • We started up at the end of 2006 and are in the midst of our 11th season.
    • In 2006, a group of like-minded mothers and Roller Derby Girls who were skating with another league decided to venture out on their own and start their own flat track derby league.
    • They started Snohomish County’s first and only amateur flat track roller derby league, the Jet City Rollergirls. After months of planning, recruiting, networking, and more planning, the Jet City Rollergirls were born and started rolling around the track in August 2006.

What is Roller Derby? Fast-paced full contact team sport

    • Flat track roller derby is a fast-paced contact team sport that requires speed, strategy, and athleticism.
    • The flat track version of the sport evolved in 2001, and has quickly grown to encompass more than 400 leagues worldwide.
    • This is in large part due to the ease of setting up a flat track–it can be done on any flat surface that is suitable for skating, such as skating rinks, basketball courts, parking lots, and even airplane hangars. This greatly reduces the capital needed to start up a roller derby league, and allows small groups of people to get a league off the ground.
    • The DIY spirit that drives the sport allows roller derby leagues to create their own unique identities and adapt their structures to reflect their local communities.

    Is it Real? Yes!

    • The roller derby you may have watched in the 70s and early 80s was often scripted and rehearsed.
    • The roller derby of today is real and is thought of as more of a sport than a spectacle. The skaters involved are athletes and take the sport very seriously.
    • One reason there are so many referees rolling around is to enforce the rules, which are in place to protect athletes’ safety and preserve fairness. Among other things, skaters are not allowed to elbow, punch, grab, head butt, trip, or shove the opposing team.
    • There are still plenty of hard hits, hard falls, and fast action.

So you’re Rat City, right? Are you better than Rat City? Do you play Rat City? Everett, Sister league, Rivals, WFTDA

    • We’re Jet City Roller Derby based in Everett, Washington.
    • Rat City is a sister league in our region. We’re both members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association – the governing body of women’s flat track derby.
    • We are in the same region and play competitively against each other. Our relationship is like that of competitive rivals – we love to beat each other up.
    • Rat City is based in Seattle; we’re based in Everett, Washington.
    • Rat City has been around about 3 years longer than Jet City.
    • Rat City is organized as an LLC and Jet City is a nonprofit.

What’s the point of roller derby? To win!

    • Like any team sport, we’re competing to ultimately score the most points and win.
    • Instead of a ball, we have a jammer, who is the skater with the star on her helmet. After making it through the pack of blockers once, the jammer begins scoring points for each opposing blocker she passes legally and in bounds. She can also score points on opponents who are in the penalty box and can get a fifth point if she laps the opposing jammer.
    • Blockers are trying to stop the opposing team’s jammer while helping their own jammer get through.

Why don’t you play on a banked track?

    • The flat track version of the sport evolved in 2001, and has quickly grown to encompass more than 400 leagues worldwide.
    • This is in large part due to the ease of setting up a flat track–it can be done on any flat surface that is suitable for skating, such as skating rinks, basketball courts, parking lots, and even airplane hangars. This greatly reduces the money needed to start up a roller derby league, and allows small groups of people to get a fledgling league off the ground.
